National AIDS Commission (NAC) has urged journalists in the country to use respectful and accurate terminology when reporting on HIV and AIDS to help reduce stigma and discrimination.
The plea was made at Linde Hotel in mponera where NAC conducted a high level media engagement meeting.
In an interview with Yetu rlRadio, NAC Chief Executive Officer Dr Beatrice Matanje says through accurate reporting the media can help reduce stigma, promote prevention and encourage access to treatment.
“Inaccurate or sensationalized reporting can exacerbate stigma and discrimination, thereby thwarting remarkable gains the country has registered over the years” said Matanje.
Matanje also asked the media to challenge stereotypes by combating negative perceptions and disseminating messages of hope to the people living with HIV and AIDS.
