Former President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has voiced concern over the apparent silence of the religious community on matters of national governance.
Speaking at a special prayer session organized by 55 pastors from the Nkhoma CCAP Synod, Mutharika said it is disheartening that faith-based groups have remained quiet at a time when many Malawians are facing severe socio-economic challenges.
“It is sad to see religious groups choosing silence when the nation is suffering,” said Mutharika.
“The country is in pain, and this is not the time for the church to remain silent.”
Mutharika, however, commended the pastors from the Nkhoma Synod for what he described as their boldness and solidarity.
He thanked them for reaching out to pray with him and showing support during what he called “these trying times.”
The former Head of State also acknowledged the tough conditions facing Malawians, including members of the clergy, attributing the hardships to what he described as a “clueless administration” currently in power.
He assured the gathering that “the suffering will soon come to an end,” pointing to anticipated political change expected in September this year.
In his concluding remarks, Mutharika urged Malawians not to stop praying for the country, emphasizing that “in times of national grief, the only true comforter is the Lord.”
