The Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has commended political parties for showing commitment to women empowerment by entrusting them with key leadership roles.

The praise follows the decision by four presidential candidates in the upcoming 16 September general elections to select women as their running mates.

Speaking to Yetu Radio, NGO-GCN Chairperson Maggie Kathewera Banda expressed satisfaction with the development, saying it signifies progress in promoting gender equality in the country.

“This is a positive step towards women empowerment. It demonstrates that political parties are beginning to recognize the value women bring to leadership,” said Banda.

She, however, emphasized that women should not just be used symbolically but must be fully supported with the tools and opportunities necessary to lead effectively.

Banda also urged the public to support female candidates during the 16 September polls, stressing that meaningful participation of women in leadership is key to achieving the goals of the 50-50 campaign.
