World Food Program Acting Country Director Simon Denhere has expressed concern that if the agency does not secure approximately $ 10 million on time, it will suspend its food assistance program at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
In an interview with Yetu FM, Denhere acknowledged that a rise in conflicts across the globe makes it difficult for the donor community to prioritize the Dzaleka protracted situation.
“If we fail to secure about 10 million US dollars, refugee food assistance will be further reduced by May 2025, a situation already affected by a previous reduction of 75% in the refugee’s food assistance in their daily food needs down to just 50%,” said Denhere.
The UN Food Agency together with the Government of Malawi and other development partners are putting intervention in place to avoid the food assistance cut-down situation at camp.
Therefore, Denhere appeals to well-wishers and other development partners to come in by providing little assistance to avoid the reduction from happening.
Meanwhile, Dzaleka Children Relief Services (CRS) Executive Director, Roger Shamavu has made an urgent call for action saying the suspension of food assistance is a life-threatening crisis, and urgent intervention is needed from humanitarian organizations, governments, and donors.
Shamuvu then urged the UN Refugee Agency to expand income-generating programs for refugees to enable their food sustainability.
