The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has empowered community radio reporters with digital skills to enhance online reporting.

Speaking on the sidelines of a two-day training for community radio reporters at Chikho Hotel in Mponela, Dowa, MACRA Deputy Director of Broadcasting Kelton Masangano expressed optimism that the acquired skills will help the reporters to navigate the digital media landscape responsibly.

Addressing the participants, Masangano, urged the reporters to embrace digital platforms to expand their audience reach and enhance interaction with listeners.

He stated that the initiative will strengthen grassroots journalism, ensuring that local communities receive accurate and timely news and attract more advertisers, boosting the sustainability of community radio stations.

“With the rise of social media, fake news has become a major threat to credible journalism. This training will help community reporters verify information before publication and use digital platforms effectively,” said Masangano.

One of the participants of the training, Fegson Phabuli from Chisomo Community Radio expressed gratitude for the training, describing it as a game-changer for local journalists.

“We will now easily fight fake news and misinformation as we have been equipped with the skills to detect fake news, among others,” Said Phabuli.
