In a twist of events the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) under the Nkhoma Synod has distanced itself from a group of 55 individuals who recently visited former President Peter Mutharika at his residence in Mangochi.

In an official letter signed by the Synod’s General Secretary, Rev. Vasco Kachipapa, the church clarified that the group did not represent the Synod and only a handful of its pastors were involved.

“Out of our 267 congregations, only six individuals associated with the Synod were part of the group. Five are serving pastors, one is retired, and one was dismissed from the ministry in 2020,” said Rev.

Kachipapa. He emphasized that the individuals travelled as a group under the name Pastors Fraternal and not as an official delegation of the CCAP Nkhoma Synod.

He further stated that the visit was politically motivated and not connected to the church’s mission or values.

The Synod named the pastors known to them as: Rev. Chifunilo Damalankhunda, Rev. Jacob Kadzakumanja, Rev. Stafford Makuta, Rev. Sydney Phula Banda, Rev. Sitiyoni Mtama, retired pastor Rev. Waison Chiwaula, and Mr. D.C. Kawanga — the latter of whom was dismissed from pastoral duties in 2020.
