There is Hope Board Member, Simalike Musyani, has emphasized that professional skills are a vital tool for driving national development.

Musyani made the remarks on Friday at There is Hope during a graduation ceremony for 105 students who completed a six-month training program, running from January to June 2025. The graduates were trained in carpentry and joinery, fabrication and welding, solar photovoltaic installation, bricklaying, plumbing, and tailoring and fashion design.

Speaking to Yetu FM, Musyani noted that professional skills foster self-reliance and play a key role in the growth of communities.

She further urged the graduates to apply their newly acquired skills with dedication and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic progress.

Meanwhile, Evance Kalepa, an official from Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting refugees and surrounding communities with technical skills as part of efforts to help them transition from aid to self-reliance.

WHH has been financially supporting There is Hope’s Skill Up Project since 2024, a program scheduled to run until 2027.

One of the graduates, Laurencia Phiri, who studied tailoring and fashion design, said she is confident that the skills she has gained will enable her to earn an income, noting that tailoring remains a highly marketable trade.

Yetu community radio was established in 2018 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the mission of serving as a model of peaceful co-existence between the Malawian and refugee communities in addressing issues of child protection, GBV, and human rights by providing a platform for all people to access information and speak on issues that affect them through media programming. Yetu community radio boasts of being a unique radio as it is based in a refugee camp setup and is the only radio in Malawi that broadcasts in five languages, namely; English, Chichewa, Kiswahili, French, and Kinyarwanda. The station broadcasts on 107.6 MHZ across the central region of Malawi.
