Good Neighbors International Malawi has disclosed plans to roll out a new project in Dzaleka Refugee Camp aimed at enhancing food crisis response and building community resilience through livelihood support.

The revelation was made on Thursday during Dowa District Council Executive Committee meeting.

Speaking to Yetu Radio, Project Manager Aubrey Gunda said the initiative is designed to address some of the major challenges faced by refugees in the camp.

He further highlighted that the project aims to empower refugees with agricultural inputs so they can engage in both rain-fed and dry-season farming as a way of strengthening refugees’ economic resilience.

He also stated that a market has already been secured for the refugees to sell their produce once the project begins, however, beneficiaries will have the freedom to sell their products wherever they choose.

The project, worth 500 United States dollars, will benefit 210 refugee households and 60 households from the host community.

Yetu community radio was established in 2018 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the mission of serving as a model of peaceful co-existence between the Malawian and refugee communities in addressing issues of child protection, GBV, and human rights by providing a platform for all people to access information and speak on issues that affect them through media programming. Yetu community radio boasts of being a unique radio as it is based in a refugee camp setup and is the only radio in Malawi that broadcasts in five languages, namely; English, Chichewa, Kiswahili, French, and Kinyarwanda. The station broadcasts on 107.6 MHZ across the central region of Malawi.
